Art and History of Modena
To this day, the Roman road, Via Emilia, passes through the centre of Modena separating the medieval part of the city from the part built by the Este family, which is dominated by the tower of the Ducal Palace. The heart of the city hosts the union of its two greatest historical periods, the Roman Era and the Este domination.
The city's Gothic Cathedral sits in the historical centre surrounded, on one side by the curvilinear streets of the medieval houses and arcades, and on the other side, by the geometric layout of the Estense streets. The centre also holds many Romanesque churches, the Civic Museums and the Estense Library which conserves many important volumes and miniatures. The Ducal Palace now hosts the prestigious Military Academy.
