Cusine of Modena and Emilia
The culinary products of Modena are typical of the Padana Plain in general: Grana Padano cheese, cold cuts such as coppa and mortadella, world-famous cherries from the town of Vignola and the esteemed, traditional balsamic vinegar which has a myriad of uses in cooking. The city is famous for its handmade pasta such as tagliatelle, flat egg noodles, or tortellini, squares stuffed with meat or vegetables. The classic wine of Modena is Lambrusco, a sparkling red, which is produced from several varieties of local grapes, the most prestigious being Sorbara and Grasparossa.
There are many places to enjoy the local or traditional cuisine: restaurants in the city, in the countryside and in famous hotels as well as holiday farms in the hills of Modena. There are also food and wine tours, known as 'oeno-gastronomic routes', that can be travelled throughout the province. The most popular are the Strade dei Vini, or 'Wine Roads', that lead to various wineries and holiday farms.
